Delectable Opera
Medley
Fascinating re-encounter with Nina Pavlovski
Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra.
Conductor: Giancarlo Andretta.
Soloists: Nina Pavlovski (soprano) and Kristina Wahlin (mezzo-soprano).
At The Concert Hall of the Danish Radio, Friday, 30 September 2006
When a
soloist steps in due to a sudden cancellation, the audience must accept a less
exclusive programme. Instead of the advertized arias, we were given standard
fare such as Bellini’s ’Casta Diva’ from Norma and ’Pace, pace’ from
Verdi’s La Forza del Destino, as well as the ouverture for Nabucco.
However,
with Andretta at the helm, an additional orchestral piece by Verdi went down
like chocolate with chili. And there was certainly no reason to complain about
Nina Pavlovski’s appearance on stage. If her numbers were among the more
familiar ones, she herself is an artist we hear much too seldom. With Pavlovski
and Andretta, an opera medley such as the Sjælland Symphony Orchestra’s 40th
anniversary concert became an irresistable delicacy.
It was a
bold move to start out so softly with ”Casta Diva” which she sang with a
dreamlike inwardness - almost airily, with a subtle, inner light. So much
sharper was the strike of the dramatic claw when Verdi’s Leonora gave voice to
her loneliness, lostness and embitterment in a final crescendo like a clenched
fist, as intense as it was brillant. Her voice has so much personality, such a
range of colours, and her dramatic involvement is without reserve.
In ’Un
bel di’ from Madame Butterfly with its structurally grand phrasing, the
young geisha’s passion and longing fused indissolubly with her childlike - but
at this point highly threatened - naiveté. Glorious and proud climaxes
alternated with wonderfully delicate fade-outs.

"Performing in the original language, Pavlovski succeeded in singing the
piano passages in a wonderful mezzo voce.
With a dramatic and great forte, the interpretation was unbelievably captivating
and memorable, filled with drama and poetry."
WESTDEUTSCHER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG
"The Danish-Russian singer Nina
Pavlovski performed the Seven Shostakovich songs for Soprano and Piano Trio with
a richly faceted, passionate and colourful voice."
